3 Of A Kind Jew
- by JamesW
JEW 1
It's been a goal of mine for a long time to snare a jew on a lure. Last week it happened! Not once but three times!
Myself and Kiwifisho (Dean) hit up a local waterway to see if we could lure up some flatties and have a crack at some jew we have heard of lurking around. Having just purchased a new outfit with 8lb black Fireline I was keen to hear my new Penn Prestige squeal a little. Atomic Prong Guzzlers (3-inch Old Penny) being my favourite soft plastic of late, I was quickly into a few nice flatties in no time. Kiwi soon joined in on the action with a Squidgy fish caught flatty too.
After more chrome looking foish I soon changed to a Squidgy flick bait in pacific pearl colour. The flathead seemed to love these too. I then changed my retrieve from quite violent upward twitches to point the rod tip down and only give it the lightest of tweaks , working the lure along the bottom.
The bump I felt was so subtle and was taken by surprise to have a weight on the end of my line given it was only the lightest of bumps.
A short tussle began but I knew it wasn't a flathead, it just felt different. Different headshakes and good little runs both up and down the river. The moment I saw a flash of silver I knew what it was - A JEW!
It looked massive! Huge! A monster! I was just so excited to be connected to a jew, finally.
Once landed and in my hands of course the size shrunk, we didn't have a mat with us but we guessed it at 40-45cm. I was a happy man to at last have my own quarry - the King of the Estuary!
JEW 2
So it was, two days later in the same spot. It was a hot Saturday and I gave Keechie a call to see if he wanted to head out for a fish. Keechie being Keechie was already out there!
An hour later I turned up and said g'day to Keechie who was out in a boat. Using my flickbaits from the start I landed a bream and had a few tailor bite-offs before deciding to move positions.
First cast I let the plastic hit the bottom and started my 'new' retreive. After two twitches I felt that subtle bump, bump again. My heart was in my mouth and then we were connected! My 6'6" Wilson rod was buckled over and the drag was squealing... and then as quick as it all happened - I was dusted!
I had no doubt it was another jew.
After a few loud expletives I was rigged up again and back out there. I landed a few small flatties before I was hooked up again to another jewie!
This fish, like the last, gave that soft bump but it was practically under my feet when it happened. The rod bent at a crazy angle, drag squealed like mad and this fish was headed upstream with the current. The head shakes were giving me the creeps as I thought at any moment I was done for.
